Navigation Device Aids in Knee Replacement Operations

Knee replacement surgery has taken a giant leap forward as Dr. Steven Zelicof ushers in a new era of state-of-the-art orthopaedic surgery techniques at Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester.

Computer-Assisted Surgery

Dr. Zelicof is pioneering the use of a new computer-assisted navigation device used in total knee replacement surgery, making Sound Shore Medical Center the first hospital in the country to utilize this exciting new technology.

The computer-assisted surgery (CAS) system uses 3D imaging technology and real-time sensing, giving numerous benefits for the surgeon such as improved visualization and better diagnostic abilities. This innovative technology makes operations much less invasive, increases surgery success rates and shortens recovery time for the patient.

High-Tech Hip and Knee Replacement

According to Dr. Steven Zelicof, “It’s almost like a GPS system. It knows where you are in reference to the bone and where the cuts need to be made. Historically, we used patients’ bones to help us align the implant, or a long rod that was put in the patients’ leg.”
