In the News: Sound Shore Medical Center Chief of Orthopaedics Named Medical Consultant for NY Sportimes

Dr. Zelicof: Westchester NY's Sports Medicine Specialist

Steven B. Zelicof, MD, PhDSummer is here and the weekend athletes and professional players alike are poised to make their mark on their sport of choice. For Steven B. Zelicof, MD, PhD, Chief of Orthopaedics at Sound Shore Medical Center, he does not need to choose – he is interested in all sports and all athletes. However, between July 7 and 22, Dr. Zelicof’s attention does turn to the professional athlete and the game of tennis. Again this year, he is serving as medical consultant for the World Team Tennis’ New York Sportimes team. Now in its thirty-fourth year, professional league tennis is the tune-up for the U. S. Open and draws many top-flight players. Naturally, safeguarding their orthopaedic well-being is paramount importance and providing topflight medical expertise is vital. So, New York Sportimes players, including current stars, and former greats, like John McEnroe, are in good hands when Dr. Zelicof is courtside for the home games scheduled for their new stadium on Randall’s Island.

With B.S., PhD and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania along with prestigious orthopaedic specialty training at the Hospital for Special Surgery and fellowship training in joint reconstruction at Harvard, he is well qualified for the orthopaedic needs of all individuals. In addition to holding U.S. and international patents in prosthetic joint design, Dr. Zelicof is also one of only a few surgeons trained in the innovative Birmingham Hip Resurfacing Technique – a revolutionary approach to restoring hip function without the need for a total joint replacement. This is a particularly exciting approach for the younger individual, who strives for a broad range of mobility and a continued active life-style after surgery.

This widely published and accomplished surgeon manages to find time in his busy schedule to participate in sports, which adds to his understanding of the psychological as well as physical ramifications of disease and disorders for the active individual. Besides involvement with World Team Tennis, he is a regional medical director for the Professional Golfers Association, Ladies Professional Golfers Association and Champions Tours. Though keenly interested in the professional athlete, he is equally concerned for the recreational athlete or active individual – young and old. He takes professional pride in restoring an individual’s quality of life, whether it’s walking pain free or resuming sports – from that friendly round of golf to the competitive set of tennis.

Westchester's Joint Replacement Specialist

In addition to his position at Sound Shore Medical Center, Dr. Zelicof is Chief of Arthritis & Joint Reconstruction Service at Westchester Medical Center and is Associate Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery at New York Medical College, Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery – Weill Medical College of Cornell University, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, New York Medical College and Assistant Professor Medicine, New York Medical College. As well as actively involved in teaching the next generation of surgeons, this specialist in reconstructive surgery is a frequent lecturer, both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Zelicof has the respect and admiration of his patients, but he also enjoys recognition by his peers and national publications. He is routinely listed in Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors in the New York Metro Area.

Whether an individual is a professional or recreational athlete, holds a tennis racquet or a golf club, or simply wants to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, Dr. Zelicof and his team of specialists strive to keep everyone at the top of their game.
