Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a medical condition characterized by a compressed wrist nerve that results in pain, numbness, and muscle weakness in the hand. Oftentimes, carpal tunnel syndrome can feel debilitating. Carpal tunnel syndrome is responsible for decreased productivity and fatigue during the day, as well as the loss of fine motor skills that result in an inability to do the simple things - button buttons, tie your shoes, turn a key, or apply makeup. Often the irritability that accompanies carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most frustrating effects.

What are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome manifests itself in a number of ways, with some unusual symptoms including shoulder pain as well as an inability to sleep. If you've been experiencing the following symptoms, you should consider a consultation with one of Specialty Orthopaedics’ hand specialists:

  • Numb, tingling sensation in your hands that interrupts your sleep
  • Hand pain / wrist pain
  • Cold hands
  • Achy shoulders and neck
  • Poor circulation
  • Weak hands and wrists / loss of fine motor skills

Carpal Tunnel Surgery

Surgery to alleviate the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome involves releasing tension on the median nerve that has been built up as a result of repeated wrist movements causing swelling in the wrist. Dr. Berenfeld is trained in minimally invasive procedures such as endoscopic carpal tunnel release as well as wrist and shoulder arthroscopy.

An “open” carpal tunnel release procedure involves the surgeon creating a small incision down the center of the palm to expose the carpal tunnel, which can then be dissected to relieve the built up pressure.

Endoscopic carpal tunnel release procedures are similar, but also minimally invasive because the surgeon employs an endoscope to see inside the carpal tunnel and cut the carpal tendon with an attached knife.
