Knee Pain Treatment & Total Knee Replacement

Westchester, New York based Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Steven Zelicof specializes in reconstructive surgery of the hip, knee, and shoulder joints utilizing advanced minimally invasive techniques designed to get you up and running again as soon as possible.

Total knee replacement, also referred to as total knee arthroplasty, involves replacing a knee joint damaged by severe arthritis, trauma, or malignant tumors. The original joint is replaced with a prosthesis, with most surgeries resulting in a full recovery and the return of a full range of mobility for the patient.

The knee joint is one of the most important and constantly used joints in the body and is formed by the intersection of three bones: the femur, the tibia and the patella.  The thighbone, or femur, is connected to the shinbone, or tibia, in a joint covered by the kneecap, or patella.  Muscles, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage act to surround, cushion and stabilize this intersection of bones. This allows the knee joint to endure the heavy impact activities such as walking and running.

Osteoarthritis & Knee Pain

When the cushioning pad of cartilage is damaged by a traumatic injury or degenerated by constant wear and tear, the bones of the knee joint can grind together, causing significant pain.  Osteoarthritis, the most common affliction of the knee joint, is usually responsible for most knee aliments that lead to total knee replacement surgery. Osteoarthritis usually results from genetic disposition to the disease or past trauma.  If the knee pain condition worsens, partial or total knee replacement surgery may be the best course of action to restore full mobility and range of motion.

During total knee replacement surgery, the damaged original knee joint is removed and replaced by an artificial knee joint. The artificial knee joint, or prosthesis, mimics the bending action of a natural knee joint, allowing the recipient to return to the same level of physical activity and full range of motion as before the deterioration of the original knee joint.

While each patient’s surgical procedure presents its own set of challenges, advances in the technology and procedures associated with total knee replacement surgery have lead to significant advances in recovery rates.  More than 90 percent of patients who undergo total knee replacement surgery today are expected to have a complete and full recovery.
