Symptoms of Sciatica

Are you experiencing hip pain or a burning sensation that travels down your leg? Does the pain worsen when you sit down or get worse when you try to stand? Do you have pain in one side of your rear? You may be experiencing symptoms of sciatica.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a painful condition resulting from a pinched or irritated sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is a long nerve that runs from the lower back down into each leg. There are many conditions that can cause or aggravate sciatica, including pregnancy, obesity, or degenerative disc disease. Even wearing the wrong shoes or sleeping on a mattress that does not adequately support you.

How Is Sciatica Treated?

At Specialty Orthopaedics, our doctors have extensive experience working with patients who have back pain. We begin by addressing lifestyle issues that may be contributing to your sciatica, whether it’s the type of shoes you are wearing or a need to incorporate more exercise. We may recommend physical therapy, and we will work with you to manage your pain effectively so that you can improve your quality of life. Sciatica pain can be extremely debilitating.

Will I Need Surgery?

Sometimes, the underlying cause of the sciatica pain you are experiencing is something that requires surgery, such as scoliosis, a herniated or slipped disc, or a back fracture. In these cases, we will recommend the proper surgical procedure to correct the underlying cause of the sciatica. These surgeries may include:

  • Cervical fusion, a recommended treatment for treating degenerative disc disease and scoliosis
  • Lumbar discectomy fusion, another our recommended treatment for treating degenerative disc disease and scoliosis
  • Spinal fusion surgery for scoliosis treatment
