What Is Regenerative Medicine?
Regenerative medicine is a medical treatment to encourage rapid healing in tissue and organs that have been damaged, from disease, injury, and or repetitive use. The thought behind regenerative medicine is to use the body’s natural healing properties and to accelerate them. Regenerative medicine harnesses the body’s healing power.
Promising Field of Medicine
Regenerative medicine is an innovative approach to treatment. It holds much promise for the future treatment of diseases that do permanent damage to organs like the liver, heart, and kidneys. However, for orthopedic use, regenerative medicine is already prominently used to improve healing time, restore joints, and improve mobility. Here at Specialty Orthopaedics in Harrison, NY, we incorporate three regenerative approaches with our patients.
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy
Both during reconstructive surgeries and in place of surgery, we have successfully used PRP therapy to promote healing. The therapy uses your own blood, which is processed to extract your platelets and inject them at the site of the injury. It is commonly used as a non-surgical option to treat arthritis in the knee, hip, shoulder, or ankle, as well as to treat sprains and chronic pain. Most joint injuries respond well to PRP.
Viscosupplementation Treatment
Viscosupplementation is primarily used to treat knee arthritis. The treatment uses a gel-like substance made up of hyaluronan, also called hyaluronic acid or hyaluronate, which is injected into the patient’s joint to lower the degenerative effects of arthritis. While it is most commonly used to treat knee arthritis, it is also used to treat hip, shoulder, and ankle arthritis.
Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cells are naturally occurring in the body. Stem cells can develop into different cells, making them ideal in the use of regenerative medicine. Stem cell therapy is utilized at Specialty Orthopaedics to stimulate your body’s healing process for patients suffering from a wide range of orthopedic conditions, including arthritis, injury, and age-related damage.
